Blog/Article Review

Feature Shoot
Classic Statues Photographed as Everyday Hipsters
by JULIA SABOT on JUNE 11, 2013

Feature Shoot is a blog composed of many different photographers with a variety of themes. The curator is Alison Zavos of Austin, Texas and her editors are Amanda Gorence of Brooklyn, Matthew Leifheit of New York city, and Tess Parks an intern from Toronto, Canada. All of them of different backgrounds and culture. The blog has over 3000 international photographers, so it has lots to look at. It is very well organized, it has themes of all kinds (beauty, food, culture, etc.) that you can search by month, artist, key word, and location. The way its outlined is very visually appealing, from the actual featured being the biggest on the screen to the small spotlight to the right of it. They also have space for all their sponsors. They seem to post a couple of collections everyday, most of their post reflect a variety of subjects. The whole blog is Photography based.

In looking through the blog, I came across a collection by Leo Caillard, a photographer from Paris. Julia Sabot assisted him in his project of "addressing representation" through clothing. The article demonstrates how simple unclothed "iconic figures" become all of the sudden part of the 21st century. Leo Caillard's work is contemporary or as he describes it " “what if reality was not as we see it...?” I enjoyed looking at his work, i couldn't stare at it enough. At first i was like how did he do it? How did he put the clothes on the statue? Or maybe the statues were really people dressed like statues, Ha! then i read the article, still it baffled me. I have linked Leo and Julia's name if you guys want to learn more about both of them.

My Favorite Portrait Photographers and Why

Photo taken by Loretta Lux
Loretta Lux was born in Desden, and attended the Academy of Visual arts, Munich. She focused on childhood photography. She was reviewed by Time Magazine for her ability to portray her images to "haunt and intrigue." You can view more pictures at www.lorettalux.de/

I like this photo because it definitely shows the independent nature children have. The fierceness in her eyes tell you shes in control. And her body language says don't get in my way.

Photo taken by Cig Harvey
Her photography focuses on humor and visual storytelling. This photo is from a collection she named "you look at me like an emergency." You can see more photos at www.cigharvey.com
I feel like this sometimes. Defeated, tired, alone, annoyed, its all in her eyes. And shes ok with how she feels, its only temporary and that's why i like this picture.

Girl top right dead! Laughter is deadly and i like it. I laughed so hard looking at this picture. It made me think of growing up with my sisters. All the crazy things we did and how much we laughed. Good memories.

When it hits it hits. The "itis." Everyone has caught it, some more than others and, this picture portrayed it well. Sometimes after working, running, and going to school- i land like this on my couch.

I like this photo because it shows ownership. We are stronger than men make us seem. The picture says "I run this!"

Questionare

1. What’s your major? What year will you graduate?

My major is Psychology and i should graduate in 2016.

2. Why did you choose a photography class (or photography as a major), and what do you hope to learn from school in general and this class specifically?

I chose a photography class because I figured it was fun and educational and I'm always the first to capture a picture in anything i'm doing.

I hope to learn more about psychology and how certain experiences affect people, that way i can apply what i learned in my job setting.

Also in this class i hope to learn more about why certain images are captured and maybe what effects these images have on people.

3. What are your goals after graduation? Please list your goals in reverse order, starting five years out, then three, two, one, and six months.

1. Becoming an organizational psychologist
2. Go for my Doctorate maybe
3. Receiving my masters in Psychology
4. Find a job that allows me to use my knowledge in psychology that way i get my foot in the door for my anticipated job. 2. Receiving my masters in Psychology

4. What artists, musicians, photographers, writers, movies, books have influenced you/your work?

I hope to gain an inspiration and a new influence for the work I plan to do in this class because as of now I am just doing my own thing, this subject is new to me so i'm absorbing it all.

5. Are there any important websites that you are referencing for art/photo competitions and/or information?

No, just the ones you gave us . I personally like the art photo index website.

6. What museums and/or galleries have you been to in the past year?

None.

7. Have you had any photo projects and/ or training in the past?

No. I was just a part of my best friend's grad pics.

8. What is the value of art for the artist?

In my opinion, the value of art for the artist would be the emotions and the time that was put into it that he/she valued the most.

9. What is the value of art for the audience?

In my opinion the value of art for the audience is how the art makes them feel, what it makes them think about.

10. Is photography a vocation or an avocation?

Its both, it can start as a avocation and eventually turn into a vacation depending how good you get and if you make money.

11. What is your passion?

My passion is helping people grown and develop. I enjoy seeing people grow emotionally, physically and mentally. For six years i helped train and develop people to do sales. It wasn't so much the sales that drove people to do or want to the job, it was more to gain the ability of saying i did what most people cant do. That is Direct sales business to business.

12.What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?

I am afraid of losing my parents from one day to another. I am the baby of six and their last non married, no baby having child. They are my world.

I am most unconformable when people i don't know or have no relationship (being social or work related) hug me.

13. Do you have a passport? Are you a traveller?

I do have a passport!! And yes i am a traveller, I am willing to go anywhere and everywhere, count me in! Where are we going and when do we leave?

14. Who is your favorite artist? And why?

I have yet to figure this one out.....

15. Why did you sign up for this class? What do you hope to learn from it?

I answered this in question 2.
